Walk to Water – and support the persecuted church!

In Africa, there are Christian communities that are denied access to daily essentials, such as safe drinking water, healthcare, education and work. For seven years, Open Doors has been running ‘Walk to Water’, an event aimed at raising awareness and funds to strengthen the church in Africa. We do this by providing necessities such as safe drinking water, infrastructure, healthcare, education, vocational training, and micro-loans.

Christians also face the threat of extremist groups, such as Boko Haram and al-Shabaab. Boko Haram has lead an insurgency against the Nigerian government for several years now, killing thousands. They made headlines last year for the kidnapping of over 200 schoolgirls, many of them Christian. Earlier this year we also saw Somalian extremist group al-Shabaab target Christians at Garissa University in Kenya, killing 147 people.

Seeing an opportunity to help persecuted Christians in a practical way, now numerous Christian communities have been encouraged and supported. Now they are also reaching out to Muslims around them – showing love to them in a variety of ways.

The heart of Walk to Water is people helping people. In Australia, we often take for granted basic necessities such as clean running water, education, health facilities and opportunities for vocational training.

We invite you to walk in your local area on 12 September and raise sponsorship to support the persecuted church.

“I know the importance of education as I travel to the town and see what is going on there. I have always desired to be educated. But all I can do is encourage my children to go to school… As God would have it, this literacy class was brought to our place. I was the first person to put down my name for the program. My prayers have been answered. I am so grateful.”

  • Pray for believers who are suffering for their faith in Africa. Pray that they would be encouraged knowing that God is always with them and believers around the world are praying for them.
  • Pray for an end to the violence of extremist groups such as Boko Haram and al-Shabaab. Pray that God would bring those causing violence to know the Truth and follow Jesus.
  • Praise God for how he is using Christians in Africa to show love to their neighbours. Pray that many would come to faith in Christ.

Please consider sponsoring a walk or giving to Open Doors’ ministry around the world.

Make your own or join an existing Walk to Water group! Please also pray for the event and for those who are hearing about the persecuted church for the first time. You can also subscribe to our prayer watch for weekly prayer updates.
