“Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.” – 1 Peter 2:18
Have you ever suffered for your faith in Jesus at your workplace?
Have you been laughed at for going to church on Sunday, or to a Bible study during the week? Maybe you’re not chosen for a project because of you’re faith-based values. You could even be tempted with ‘rewards’ for giving in?
That’s the situation that Sarah* from Tajikistan is in. Sarah works for a private food company and is a Sunday school teacher at her church.
This past July, Sarah took some time off for a holiday. While she was away, her colleagues were having a spiritual conversation about the Islamic month of Ramadan. As Tajikistan is a Muslim-majority country, this conversation is typical for that time of year. One of her colleagues mentioned Sarah’s Christian faith to the director of the company. Immediately he called Sarah to come back into work from her holiday.
Sitting her down, he promised that if she denied Jesus and converted back to Islam he would increase her salary and give her a promotion.
After a lengthy conversation the director realised that Sarah would not deny Jesus, so he threatened her with dismissal. He gave her some time to rethink her decision, and started loading her with extra work and hours. Recently, he gave her an ominous warning that he had put her name on ‘some kind of list’.
As you read Sarah’s story, pray with us not just for Sarah but Christians in Australia too. Ask God to make us bold in witnessing to our workplaces and the colleagues we spend our days with.
Pray for those suffering for their faith around the world. Pray they would be filled with joy knowing their identity in Christ and strengthened in their faith.
“In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:6-7
